THE Tongariro Crossing is just as popular as ever despite two volcanic eruptions in the area in 2012.

Near Turangi in the central North Island, the 19.4km walk crosses between Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe.

The Department of Conservation says the Tongariro Crossing is a day trek that should take between six and eight hours.

The 2012 eruptions on Mount Tongariro were the first on the mountain in more than 100 years.

Flying debris damaged parts of the Ketetahi Hut, which DOC has preserved to show visitors.

The crossing is one of New Zealand’s nine great walks and sees a large number of visitors ever year, according to DOC.
